I’m just like the next avid comic reader. I am always a little on edge when Hollywood makes a comic book movie. I don’t overly jump up and down when I hear about the powers that be making a Justice League or Avengers movie, I am always so afraid someone is going to really jack it up.
Granted, Marvel has been doing some pretty great ones (Spiderman 2, Iron Man) and some lousy ones (Ghost Rider, Elektra)… DC has made some overhyped ones (Dark Knight)… so it’s interesting to see the fate of something like comic books being battled out in Hollywood.
Comics are dying. It is print media, and with the digital generation, it is getting harder and harder to make money when people can go online and get entertainment for free. Movies don’t make it better, (why read when you can sit for 2 hours and have people turn the pages for you?)
As a result, Comics have to adapt to survive. The webcomic is born, Marvel introduces reading them online (for a small fee) and the natural progression to movies is made. Now, when once it was “cool” to make fun of the kids hanging out in the comic shop, it is cool (at least for the week the movie is hot) for lemming America to flood the stores, by some bat gear, hulk shoes, and Iron Man books… and pretend to be in the know for a bit.
Why? Because E! and the TV guide channel hung out in San Diego I guess. Suddenly America wants to hang out in conventions. Go figure. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an elitist, I think that the heroes of my youth deserve a shot at survival.
It just bugged the hell out of me when I was in the theater and overheard the following conversation
Lemming 1: Oh look, his face! He must be two face!
Lemming 2: Two Face? Who’s that?
Lemming 1: You know… Tommy Lee Jones
Lemming 2: Oh right… cool.
